About

My work has been decades in the making. In 1992, I fell in love with the tile and mosaic work in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

In 2000, I started classes at the historic Pewabic Pottery in Detroit and developed a deep passion for the art of making handmade ceramic tile.  Having kids a few years later back-burnered this pursuit, but I continued to dabble over the years, honing my skills, eventually culminating with me making handmade tile for my kitchen renovation. Over 25 years later, I now have my own kiln and a fully tricked out studio.

I create the things that I wish existed and delight in the process. Curiosity, wonder, experimentation, and play are often my guides. I make what makes my soul happy.

When I open the kiln,  I’m a kid on Christmas morning.

The Studio

When we moved in, a wall in the heated detached garage had yards upon yards of industrial shelving that could support hundreds of pounds of plaster molds- almost like it was waiting for me!

One small challenge is that there is no running water, so I use a hose to fill a 5-gallon water cooler. That, plus my shop vac and rolls of paper towel keep the studio is pretty tidy. I, on the other hand, tend to leave a little bit of a foot trail of dust when I come from the studio into the house.  My husband asked, are you just going to be a little dirty all the time now? I answered, I think so.

My Process

I design and create all of my tiles using classic methods and molds that have been hand carved or cast from my original designs.  My tiles are stoneware and suited for indoor or outdoor. I begin with a design either hand carved in plaster or sculpted in clay. Once I make a mold out of plaster, I hand press the tiles into the molds, dry them, bisque fire them, glaze them and fire them again.

I’m not a production ceramicist and I enjoy the perfectly imperfect. I work in small batches and make one of a kind pieces. My practice is often experimental and constantly evolving.
